There’s one travel luxury I refuse to fly without.
And no, it’s not first class.
Most people assume that if you’re talking about luxury travel, you mean bigger seats, champagne during the flight, or fancy airline meals. Those things are nice, don’t get me wrong.
A couple of years ago my mom and I took a trip to Europe. Before our flight, we stopped somewhere inside the airport that I had never experienced before. I walked in thinking it would just be a place to sit for a few minutes.
Instead, it completely changed my brain chemistry.
Now, we also flew first class on that trip, which was great. But surprisingly, that wasn’t the part that stuck with me the most.
The real game changer happened before boarding even started.
Because if you’ve ever traveled through a busy airport, you know the usual routine.
You’re dragging your suitcase through the terminal trying to find something decent to eat. Eventually you settle on a burger and fries that costs $20–$30 and somehow still manages to be disappointing.
Then you head to the gate and try to find a seat. The chairs are stiff, crowded together, and there’s never enough space to stretch out.
And the bathrooms? Long lines, questionable cleanliness, and definitely not the place you want to spend more time than necessary.
Airports can be chaotic, loud, and exhausting—and your trip hasn’t even started yet.
Now imagine the opposite experience.
You walk into a quiet space away from the crowds. There are comfortable chairs, plenty of room to relax, and clean bathrooms that actually feel… clean.
There’s food ready for you. Drinks too. No long lines. No scrambling to find a place to sit.
Some places even have showers, private work areas, and spots where you can stretch out and rest during long layovers.
That moment is when I realized something.
The travel luxury I refuse to fly without isn’t about the plane at all.
It’s airport lounge access.
What Is Airport Lounge Access?
Airport lounge access allows travelers to enter private lounges inside airports where they can relax before their flight. Most lounges offer complimentary food and drinks (including alcoholic beverages), comfortable seating, clean bathrooms, Wi-Fi, and quiet spaces away from crowded terminals. Some lounges also include showers, nap areas, and workspaces for travelers with long layovers. I’ve even been to one that had a pool on the plane runway so you could see airplanes take off.
The first time I experienced it, I immediately understood why frequent travelers swear by it. Instead of starting your trip stressed and overstimulated, you start it calm, comfortable, and relaxed.
Now that I travel with a baby, it matters even more. It provides somewhere my daughter can rest if she needs to.
Those little things make a huge difference when you’re navigating airports with a child.
My Favorite Lounge Perks
There are a few things I always appreciate when I walk into a lounge.
Free food
Airport meals are expensive and hit-or-miss. Starting a trip with a real meal instead of overpriced fast food is always a win.
Quiet space
Airports are loud and crowded. Lounges give you a calm place to reset before boarding.
Comfortable seating
Sometimes I just want to stretch out instead of sitting upright in a stiff airport chair.
Showers during long layovers
If you’ve ever had a long layover after a red-eye flight, you know how amazing it feels to take a shower before your next flight.
How I Get Lounge Access
For a while, I was getting lounge access through my mom’s credit card. But when Capital One started charging an additional fee for authorized users, she kicked me off her account (love you, Mom).
So I finally decided to get my own Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card.
Because one thing I knew for sure: I could not lose my lounge access.
There are other ways to access airport lounges.
You can purchase memberships directly through programs like Priority Pass, or you can receive lounge access as a benefit through other travel credit cards. You can also purchase a day pass to the lounge nearest you the day you travel. Most lounges cost anywhere between $30 – $60.
If you choose to get the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card, it currently has a $395 annual fee but includes a $300 annual travel credit along with lounge access and other travel perks.
Now listen—I’m not here telling anyone to go open a bunch of credit cards. My husband and I have definitely made our fair share of mistakes with credit cards in the past, so I always say: be responsible.
But if you travel frequently, lounge access might be one of the few travel luxuries that actually makes the entire journey better.
And once you experience lounge life… sitting at the gate just feels a little barbaric.
